The Tzolkin Calendar

E-mail Print PDF
The Tzolkin or Tzolk'in [1]-The Day's Count is the name given to the sacred Mayan cycle of 260 days consisting of twenty Tonales (or thirteen months) used in the pre-Columbian Mesoamerica and equivalent to Aztec Tonalpohualli. The tzolk'in is still used in indigenous communities in the highlands of Guatemala and the state of Oaxaca in Mexico and receive the title of the guards in those days these communities herald earthly events based on dates of the sacred cycle. (Wikipedia).

Tzolikn timing cycle is the combination of 13 months and 20 days;

13 X 20 = 260

Which is very close to the human gestation period:

9 X 30 = 270

The Tzolkin Calendar is a close symbiotic relationship with the feminine nature of things, with the moon (there are 13 moons in a year) and the agricultural cycle.

The Gregorian Calendar (imposed by Pope Gregory XIII came to replace the Julian calendar in 1582,) is considered masculine in nature, without harmony (there are 31 months, 30, 29 and 28 days).

Jose Arguelles and his wife Lloydine had done a cosmological research work wich has been taken as the basis for the development of symbolic tools for understanding our universe from a different perspective.

Thanks to the messages received by oral transmission to the descendants of the ancient Maya and the numerous stelae, codices and documents have been found to create a system that allows us to both understand the world in a symbolic way as well as find links to the world predict and know ourselves.

Consider a system such as the Tarot or astrology tarot which gives us a complete system archetypal (El Loco, La Torre, the car etc. ..) that have even been used by Jung to characterize human beings in a symbolic way. Doing a thorough and consistent work can help with any other system (the Tarot, The I-Ching, Astrology, Numerology, The Archetypes by Caroline Myss ..) to know ourselves and help us identify and determine the various types of relationships we have.

Currently there are a lot of people in the world who have taken this knowledge and apply it daily to interact with the world sees the page for example can be found www.tortuga.com mathematics and symbolic relations corresponding to the dates of our birth and the day we are living!

Several correlations of the Sacred Mayan calendar with the Gregorian, we use the "Ki'ch'es" Quiche or corresponding to the third Goldman-Martínez-Thomson.
